From tips on staying healthy to choosing the right health plan, we’ve got you covered.
Eating healthy, availing of a health plan or health insurance, and boosting your immune system—there are many ways to be smart about your health and make you less susceptible to various diseases. That's why we’ve rounded up these six steps to help you get started:
- Get enough sleep. Generally, adults should get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Getting enough sleep lets your body do its work—from supporting healthy brain function to maintaining your physical health. Unsurprisingly, inadequate or poor quality of sleep makes you more vulnerable to sickness.
- Eat healthy. The Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology’s “Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos” (NGF) recommends Filipinos to eat a variety of foods daily to get the nutrition their body needs. These include vegetables, fruits, fish, and lean meat. The NGF also urges citizens to limit their intake of salty, fried, fatty, and sugar-rich foods to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
- Minimize stress. Chronic stress takes a toll on your health. When experiencing high levels of stress, engaging in moderate exercise or meditating may help calm you down. Managing stress can help you sleep better, control your weight, have less muscle tension, be in a better mood, and get along better with the people around you.
- Stay hydrated. Tea and juice can be hydrating, but nothing beats water when you’re thirsty. To know if you’re drinking enough water, check if your urine is pale yellow. If it's anything darker than that, then you need to rehydrate immediately.
- Exercise regularly. This is one of the pillars of healthy living. Aside from strengthening your immune system, it helps boost your overall mood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity can also help sharpen your thinking, learning, and judgment skills as you age. Ideally, aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of intense exercise per week.
- Invest in a health plan or health insurance that suits your needs. It’s also important to have adequate protection for you and your loved ones by getting health insurance. In case of sudden health setbacks, it pays to know that you and your family are covered. Finding a health insurance plan that can address your different varying needs and fit your budget is how you can be smart about your health.
