AXA Philippines mobilized over 700 employees to promote sustainable clean water solutions during its 2024 AXA Week for Good (AWfG). Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All, the community drive was aimed at addressing the lack of access to formal water in the Philippines, where millions of Filipinos still get their water from springs, creeks, and even rainwater.
"AXA’s noble purpose is to ‘act for human progress by protecting what matters’,” said AXA Philippines President and CEO Bernardo Serrano Lopez. “The annual AXA Week for Good is a testament that beyond ensuring financial protection for all Filipinos, we also mobilize our employees to actively protect our planet and uplift the lives of our partner local communities where we are present. This is social responsibility, sustainable impact, and our noble purpose in action.”
The AXA Week for Good provides employees the opportunity to contribute their time and talent to various community-building efforts. It is part of AXA’s globally-wide volunteering program, AXA Hearts in Action, which taps into the power of collective action to drive meaningful change. It unites all AXA employees to work together for a better future, sharing knowledge and expertise as One AXA and helping vulnerable communities around the world.
Partnering with Waves For Water Philippines, a non-profit organization, AXA Philippines initiated a week-long series of activities to address the water crisis and promote environmental conservation:
Water Filter System Assembly: volunteers assembled portable water filter systems and provided clean water access to 1,830 individuals in Barangay Maloma, San Felipe, Zambales.
Bar Soap Making: volunteers created 1,296 bars of soap, which were distributed alongside the water filters to promote better hygiene practices within the community. .
Coastal Clean-up: 85.25 kilos of waste were collected, mainly cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, and biodegradable waste, from the coastline of Sitio Laoag, San Felipe, Zambales.
Outreach Hike: organized by the AXA Mountaineering Club, volunteers trekked to Mount Cayabu and Mount Maynuba in Barangay Cayabu, Tanay, Rizal to donate P15,000 worth of mushroom fruiting bags to create livelihood opportunities for local fathers, distribute pre-loved clothes, host a Father's Day card-making activity, and facilitate a feeding program for mothers and children.
“We believe that access to clean water and a healthy environment are fundamental rights for every community. I’m proud of the dedication our team has shown. Our initiatives are our call to action to contribute positively and further inspire meaningful work,” said Krizie Yabes, Senior Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at AXA Philippines.
Activities from this year’s AWFG aim to engage a broad spectrum of AXA employees, fostering a sense of shared purpose and responsibility towards the environment and society. The company's goal is to continue involving all employees in meaningful volunteer work, showcasing its commitment to protecting what matters most – its people, planet, and community.
One of the volunteers, Renz Angeloe Reyes, BA Training Officer at AXA Philippines shared, “AXA Week for Good made me realize that the things we often take for granted like clean water and soap really go a long way for our fellow countrymen from far-flung areas. I am very proud to be part of the event, from soapmaking to coastal clean-up and distribution of water filtration systems in Zambales. Even though it is far, seeing their smiles when they received the soaps and filtration systems, made it all worth it.”
Another volunteer and a member of the AXA Mountaineering Club, Lyn Leonardo, Junior Sales Manager at AXA Philippines added, “The club was introduced to me last November 2023 by one of my team members. Now, hiking is already one of my favorite pastimes to unplug and take a break from work. And for the community outreach, I feel very blessed to interact while helping the local community specifically the fathers and kids by sharing some treats/shoes/clothes to wear and introducing another livelihood program that will help their own family.”Globally, over 5,600 AXA volunteers actively participated in environmental and water conservation initiatives this year, reflecting the entity’s commitment to making a meaningful difference across all its markets.
